A ROARING SUCCESS FOR LANKA LIONS

15 Jan 08, Lanka Lions Cricket Club, in their first-ever season, emerged champions of the Singapore Cricket Association Division Two League 2007. They also had the distinction of being the only unbeaten team among more than 50 clubs who played playing league cricket in Singapore.

A jubilant Lanka Lions President Uresh Perera proclaimed that “this excellent result comes out of all the hard work, dedication and time devoted to practice by the players as well as the support of well wishers who cheered the team throughout the season.”

Lanka Lions will play in Division One in 2008. Club captain Mohamed Silmi Nawaz said that Lanka Lions hope to put up a strong showing in the highest league in Singapore.

Cricket has grown rapidly in Singapore. Participation levels and performances in schools, the adult league and of the national team have all improved.

Singapore also have a women’s national team.

“Lanka Lions hope to contribute to developing Singapore cricket and help foster stronger sporting ties with established cricket nations such as Sri Lanka.  We hope that these ties will further improve Singapore cricket,” said Lions president Uresh.

Uresh added that Lanka Lions Cricket Club was registered in Singapore by a group of Sri Lankan expatriates and Singaporeans of Sri Lankan origin. “It was formed to promote sport, especially cricket, among its members.”
