Imran elected to ICC Board

Singapore cricket celebrated with a victory off the pitch when our president Imran Hamid Khwaja became the first Singaporean to be elected onto the ICC Board. Imran’s position is further reason for local cricket to jump for joy after the good showing by the Republic’s cricketers in the international arena.

The ICC Board is a powerful decision and policy making organ of cricket. The Board usually comprises the different top officials from the Test playing countries.

Imran has held various positions before this latest elevation. He is Vice President in the ACC and Chairman of the Committee which will meet shortly to decide the selection of the best talents in Asia in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the ACC.

Said Imran: “I am delighted and honoured to have been elected to the Board of ICC. Cricket is going through some changes and it is a privilege to participate in the making of policies which will hopefully restore cricket to its status of a gentleman's game, albeit a rich gentleman.”

Said Deputy President Mahmood Gaznavi: “The SCA Exco are elated that Imran has been duly recognised. We have benefitted from his leadership at home and his newly-elected status can only be of further benefit for local cricket. I am sure everyone who is associated with the game in Singapore knows that Imran will continue to play a positive role for cricket, both domestic and international.”

ACC accolades for Singapore

SINGAPORE’S strong administration and its success on the pitch has earned the accolades of the Asian Cricket Council.

In the ACC Annual Report 2007-2008 presented to the delegates at the recent ACC Annual General Meeting in Karachi on 5-6 July 2008, the Republic came for praise. The report stated: “Singapore’s administration is one of the finest in the world and the national team is making significant progress up the ladder.”

Our honorary secretary M. Neethianathan was pleased with the acknowledgment. “We have always taken pride in putting our plans in place with effective planning and execution. The good news is that our efforts have been recognised. We continue to look for methods to improve.”

The national team has also performed well in the international arena. In the Under-15 ACC tournament, we finished champions. At the Under-19 ACC competition, we were 5th. At the senior level, we beat Afghanistan in the World Cricket League Division 5 competition in Jersey to finish 5th. At the ACC Twenty20, we were joint 5th. In the annual clashes with our neighbours Malaysia, we won both the Saudara Cup and the Stan Nagaiah Trophy.

ACC ELITE TROPHY 2008

Tue, 08 July 08, CHAMINDA Ruwan will lead Singapore’s challenge in the Asian Cricket Council tournament starting in Kuala Lumpur from 25 July 2008 to 2 August 2008.

Ruwan’s leadership was never in issue. In fact, his performance in Jersey at the recent World Cricket League Division 5 was praiseworthy with many of the teams acknowledging his acumen. “Chaminda has led us with determination and passion,’’ said our honorary secretary M. Neethianathan. “We continue to stick with him.”

The team leaves for KL on 23 April 2008.

Singapore is in Group B with Qatar, Kuwait, Nepal and defending champion Hongkong. Group A comprises Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Afghanistan.

SCA LAUNCHES FIRST OF SEVERAL COURSES

Mon, 07 Jul 08, The first of a series of courses for Singapore’s cricketers was launched at Kallang on 7 July 2008 when the Fast Bowling Course kicked off. With the aim of lifting the standard in the league, SCA has planned various other programmes.

“These programmes will be offered regularly,’’ said SCA Deputy President Mahmood Gaznavi. “We want to lift the standard. Those who are good can become better.”

Cricket enthusiasts can look forward to the Batting Course, the Spinners’ Course, the Wicketkeepers’ Course and the Fielding Course.

Saad Khan Janjua and Chetan Suryawanshi were the course conductors for the first programme. “We want to make use of our SCA resources and allow cricket lovers the chance to learn and improve,’’ said Gaznavi.

“It was really nice to see the interest of the participants and their serious involvement in the game,” said Saad, who spearheads the Ceylon Sports Club attach in Division 1. “More than them, Chetan and I enjoyed the sessions.”

ANISH PARAAM IN TOP 12 IN WCL DIV 5

14 June 08, Singapore’s Anish Paraam (left) had been included among the top 12 players from the recently-concluded World Cricket League Division 5 competition in Jersey in which Singapore finished 5th in the 12-nation contest.

The youngest player of the national team at 17 years, Anish caught the eye of the selectors with his left-arm spin bowling. Picked by CricketEurope, the Pre-University 2 student of Raffles Junior College was said to be “top of this class” for his haul of 16 wickets, conceding only 2.12 runs an over.

Anish picked up wickets in each of the games he played. His figures are as follows : -
Group B match versus Jersey : 3-21;
Group B match versus Botswana 3-20;

METEORIC RISE

SINGAPORE CLIMB 11 PLACES AND ARE NOW 23RD IN THE WORLD
06 June 08, Singapore cricket received due recognition after their fantastic performance in the recently-concluded World Cricket League Division 5 competition in Jersey.

The Republic climbed 11 places to move to 23rd position in the world in the ICC Associate and Affiliate global rankings. The success comes in the wake of the national senior team’s hugely-successful outing in the WCL Division 5 where Singapore finished 5th.

Singapore were extremely unlucky not to have progressed further after rain washed out their match against the Bahamas in Group B. Bahamas failed to score a single win in the group which also included hosts Jersey, Afghanistan, Botswana and Japan. Read More >>>

DETERMINED SINGAPORE CLINCH RESPECTABLE 5TH POSITION IN WCL DIV 5

SINGAPORE clinched 5th position in the World Cricket League Division 5 tournament in Jersey with a stunning 15-run win over Bostswana on 31 May 2008.

Asked to bat first, Singapore found the conditions difficult to negotiate. Only 3 batsmen – Openers Narender Reddy (31) and Chetan Suryawanshi (15) and No.10 Shoib Razak (11) reached double figures on a treacherous surface that saw the ball slowing down, popping up and swinging unpredictably as Singapore were restricted to 199 in 42.1 of the allotted 50 overs. SINGAPORE STAY IN HUNT FOR 5TH SPOT IN WCL DIVISION 5

SINGAPORE’s cricketers lifted themselves from the disappointment of being denied a place in the semi-finals to score a 54-run win over Mozambique and stay in the hunt for 5th position in the World Cricket League Division 5 tournament in Jersey on 30 May 2008.

The Republic, who finished with 7 points after their match against last-paced Bahamas was rained off in Group B, were edged out into third place on nett run-rate by Afghanistan. Singapore, Botawana, Germany and Mozambique were left to fight for 5th position in the 12-nation contest. Read More ..

GALLANT SINGAPORE BEAT JAPAN BUT DENIED PLACE IN SEMIS

DESPITE playing their best cricket ever, Singapore found themselves bundled out of the semi-finals of the World Cricket League Division 5 competition in Jersey with rain proving to be the decisive factor.

Yesterday, the Republic defeated Japan by 52 runs to finish Group B with 3 wins and, 1 loss and 1 abandoned match but it was the rained-off encounter against the Bahamas which prevented Singapore from picking up the vital points in their quest to end up second in their group.

After losing to Jersey in the opener, Singapore beat Botswana and favourites Afghanistan. The Republic’s 2 remaining matches against Japan and the Bahamas were both unable to be played on schedule because of rain. That meant that the organisers were able to use the rest day yesterday to play only one match – against Japan – with the match against the Bahamas being declared a no-result with the teams getting one point each. ABANDONED MATCH AGAINST BAHAMAS CAUSES REPUBLIC BIG WORRY

SINGAPORE’S chances of advancing into the semi-finals of the World Cricket League Division 5 received a jolt when rain prevented play in their match against Bahamas on 28 May 2008.

The result means that the Republic will have to beat Japan by a huge margin – by at least 305 runs – on 29 May 2008 to pip Afghanistan for the second spot in Group B and a place in the last 4. Singapore beat Botswana and favourites Afghanistan after their opening match loss to hosts Jersey.

“It has made our job a lot more difficult,’’ said captain Chaminda Ruwan. “We were looking to picking up 2 points each against the Bahamas and Japan and advancing but the weather had been cruel to us.”

The 10-day competition involves 12 teams. Nepal and the United States have qualified from Group A. Jersey tops Group B.

JANIK HELPS SINGAPORE SINK AFGHANISTAN IN FAMOUS WIN

SINGAPORE cricket scored its biggest win ever when the Republic defeated fancied Afghanistan by 69 runs in a Group B match in the World Cup League Division 5 competition in Jersey on 27 May 2008.

Needing a win to stay alive in the 12-nation tournament after having lost to Jersey and beaten Botswana in their earlier matches, Singapore lost the toss and were asked to bat first in a rain-affected game reduced to 30 overs per innings.

Singapore scored 145 in 29.3 overs before bundling out tournament favourites Afghanistan for 76 in 20.2 overs to register an upset. Read More..

SINGAPORE-JAPAN MATCH CALLED OFF BECAUSE OF RAIN

Singapore's Group B match against Japan in the World Cup League Division 5 in Jersey was called off without a ball being bowled on 26 May 2008.

Although the sun was up the whole day, play was not possible after overnight rain had crept onto the wicket, making the playing surface damp. Inspections at half-hour intervals ended at 4.15pm, local time, when the umpires ruled that the conditions were not suitable for play.

The organisers will meet later to decide if a replay will take place on 29 May 2008, the designated rest day for the 10-day competition.

Singapore, who lost to Jersey and beat Botswana, play Afghanistan next on 27 May 2008.

ANISH, MENDIS SHOW THE WAY IN WIN OVER BOTSWANA

25 May 08, SINGAPORE rode on a mature display from 17-year-old Anish Paraam and an exciting batting display from Buddhika Mendis to score a 3-wicket win over Botswana in their second match in the World Cup League Division 5 Group B match in Jersey on 25 May 2008.

Whilst the duo were the more recognizable contributors, the Republic’s other spinners performed their task asked of them as all the 9 Botswana wickets to fall went to the slower bowlers. Botswana’s 183-9 was a competitive total, especially when their first 3 bowlers went on the offensive from the first delivery. But Anish, with 66 not out, and Mendis with 79, ensured victory in 47.3 overs. Read More ...

RAIN HALTS PLAY AGAINST BOTSWANA

24 May 08, Singapore’s second match in the World Cricket League Division 5 competition – against Botswana -- in Jersey was rained off on 24 May 2008.

After winning the toss, Chaminda Ruwan elected to bat. Singapore suffered a shock when opener Narender Reddy was clean bowled off the 4th delivery without any runs being scored. But Ruwan partnered Buddhika Mendis and the pair batted through cold winds and the drizzle to advance to 91-1 in 23 overs before intense rain meant no further play was possible.

Buddhika was unbeaten on 40 in 66 balls and Ruwan was 47 not out in 69 balls when play was stopped. The game will be replayed in its entirely on 25 May 2008.

“We were in a good position,’’ said Ruwan. “But we have to put it behind us and start all over again when we replay the match.”

Singapore made 2 changes to the side that played Jersey, replacing Chetan Suryawanshi and Rizwan Madakia with Zeng Renchun and Dharmichand Mulewa.

SINGAPORE LOSE OPENER TO HOSTS JERSEY

23 May 08, Singapore lost to hosts Jersey by 93 runs in their opening match of the World Cricket League Division 5 competition on 23 May 2008.

Skipper Chaminda Ruwan won the toss and elected to field. That correct call turned out to be the only right thing for the Republic as Jersey built on a slow start to post 189 in 49.4 overs.

The asking rate of 3.8 runs looked far from difficult but Singapore’s batsmen found the cold winds and unknown surface difficult to negotiate to be dismissed for 96 in 41.4 overs. Jersey’s bowling was very disciplined. Their openers bowled almost mechanically, landing the ball in the difficult zone ball after ball. There were no significant partnerships from Singapore and apart from Christopher Janik’s 34, none of the other Singapore batsmen reached the 20s. Read More...

Anish, Timothy lead Schools to close win

18 May 08, In-form Anish Paraam helped himself to 5 wickets before hitting 68 to lead Combined Schools to a 3-wicket win over President’s XI at Kallang on 10 May 2008.

Anish, who smashed an unbeaten ton the previous week in Schools’ win over Non-Benders, laid the foundation for the win which was achieved with 3 deliveries to spare in the 40-overs match.

Credit should also go to Timothy Singham, who contributed 46. Timothy faced a task of scoring more than 8 runs an over for victory and this rate crept up to 23 from the last 2 overs. But a six off M. Sachin and Sarika Prasad in the 38th and 39th overs left the Schoolboys with having to score 5 runs in the last over. Read More ...
